Botanical Name: Lobularia maritima
Heritage: USA, 1953
‘Royal Carpet’ Alyssum produces small fragrant pod-like flowers in shades of fuchsia and purple.
It has a low growing ground cover habit making it excellent for borders and containers. Quick to mature, it’ll thrive in garden beds or in pots, planters and baskets. Trim old growth as required to tidy plants and encourage new growth.
It self sows readily and is relatively easy to grow. Great for attracting pollinators and other beneficial insects to your garden. It was an All-America Selections Bedding Plant winner in 1953 for its low maintenance and season long perfume.
|Spring – Early Autumn||Sow Direct, or Transplant|
Alyssum seeds are best sown in spring to early autumn. Seeds can be sown in trays for transplanting, or directly in place approx. 5 – 10 cm apart when soil temperatures are between 18°c – 25°c.
|15°c - 25°c||10 - 14 days|
Transplant seedlings in clumps to a final spacing of approx. 15cm apart once plants have some true leaves.
|15cm||55 - 75 days||Half-Hardy|
It can happily be sown direct however sowing into trays and then transplanting seedlings into the garden can lead more success from these fine seeds.
Cutting back regularly will improve their visual appearance and encourage fresh growth. It grows well in cracks and small marginal areas of the garden.
