Lettuce is easy to grow, but is best grown quickly for the hearts to form and develop properly. To encourage rapid growth add generous amounts of finished compost and organic matter to your garden beds, and regularly give supplemental feedings (such as of seaweed tonic or compost tea).
As lettuce has a relatively shallow root system keep well watered for best results, especially in dry conditions. Mulching well will help with moisture retention and encouraging it to crop quickly.
If sowing close to winter, transplanting can work well for allowing plants to get underway without experiencing significant losses from bug attacks. Always ensure to remain vigilant for hungry slugs, snails and caterpillars.
Sowing a small amount regularly will help ensure a continuous supply.
