Botanical Name: Brassica japonica
Heritage: Japan, pre 1900’s
Mizuna is a delicious mild-flavoured Japanese leafy green that deserves more recognition than it receives.
It forms a large rosette of finely serrated, feather-like dark green leaves.
Its flavour is uniquely fresh and crisp, with a juicy yet crunchy texture that is perfect for salads, or steaming and stir-frying. It is a fast growing salad plant that can be eaten at all stages, and will provide several harvests when used for cut and come again harvesting.
Tolerant of both hot and cool temperatures, it’s a hardy leafy green that is very easy to grow.
Spring - Autumn
Sow Direct, or Transplant
Mizuna is best sown spring through ‘til autumn. Seeds can be sown in trays for transplanting, or directly in place approx. 20 – 40 cm apart when soil temperatures are between 12•c – 20•c.
12°c - 20°c
5 - 12 days
Transplant seedlings, or thin directly sown seeds, once plants have several true leaves to a final spacing of approx. 20cm – 30cm if plants are to be used when young, or to approx. 30cm – 40cm apart for larger plants.
It is suited for growing in pots or containers if garden space is limited.
20cm - 40cm
35 - 55 days
It can be successfully grown year round as it will tolerate heat, cold, and wet soils, but please take note that it will not tolerate dry conditions.
The younger and smaller leaves are the most tender. Making successional sowings every few weeks will provide for a sustained harvest of delicious young leaves.
Can be productive for several months by picking the lower leaves and enjoying as needed. If kept well watered and growing strongly you should be able to cut it back 4 – 5 times for harvests before the plants mature and the leaves become tougher, and they’re best pulled up and replaced.
A member of the Brassica family of plants, Mizuna is a type of Mustard green. It is a biennial that is typically grown as an annual for its young leaves.
Eat immediately upon picking for best flavour, or it will keep for several days in the fridge.
