‘Fordhook Giant’ is an abundant producer of large heavily crumpled green leaves with white veins and stalks.

Growing to approx. 40cm tall, this highly nutritious and versatile vegetable is tender with great flavour.

A long-standing home gardener’s favourite, it has a long cropping season and great bolt resistance, producing even in hot conditions. It’s a very dependable green that can be picked year round, and can be harvested as a whole plant or by the leaf.

Very easy to grow, it does best in full sun, but will tolerate partial shade, poor soils and inattention – making it perfect for beginners and busy gardeners. The small young leaves are delicious in salads, or you can use the larger leaves in stir-frys, soups, casseroles and pasta.

Beet is best sown spring through ‘til autumn. Seeds can be sown in trays for transplanting, or directly in place approx. 30cm apart when soil temperatures are between 15°c – 25°c.

It can be generally grown year round as it has excellent tolerance to high temperatures and light frosts.

The outer leaves can be harvested frequently as the more it is cut for use the more it will regrow. The plants are fast growing, low maintenance, strong and disease resistant.

If sowing close to winter, transplanting can work well for allowing plants to get underway without experiencing significant losses from bug attacks. Remain vigilant for hungry slugs, snails and caterpillars.

It is a biennial that is typically grown as an annual for its young leaves. In areas that do not experience a hard frost, it can sometimes behave like a perennial and live for several years.

Eat immediately upon picking for best flavour, or it will keep for a week or two in the fridge.

Botanical Name:
